4 Things to Do if You're Waitlisted for Medical School

Uncategorized

It's a frustrating truth, but many aspiring medical school students will, unfortunately, end up on the waitlist. If you didn't receive an offer right away, don’t panic! This happens to a lot of people, and a lot of them eventually gain acceptance. Here are four things to do if you’re waitlisted for medical school.

4 Things to Do if You're Waitlisted for Medical School

1. Keep a Positive Outlook

Get those negative thoughts out of your head. Finding yourself on the waitlist isn’t the end of your medical career. Instead of brooding over why you haven’t received your acceptance letter yet, do something to increase your chances of getting into your program of choice.

And on that note...

2. Find Ways to Improve Your Records

Medical schools seek applicants who show commitment and have exceptional records. Your best bet is to strengthen your application.

Start building your credentials! Think of becoming more active in community service activities or taking additional classes. Show them how dedicated to and proactive you are about bettering yourself as a student and a future doctor.

3. Send a Letter of Interest and Update the Committee

If they don’t have a full class by April, most medical schools’ selection committees will be looking back at their waitlist to evaluate who else to accept. So, if you haven’t heard back from them yet, sending a letter confirming your interest is a good move to help get your application back in the limelight for reassessment.

Your letter should express your eagerness in joining the program, the reason why you want to join them, and the ways you will be able to contribute to their institution. This is where step number two can help. Updating them on your new achievements and letting them know how you’ve improved can show your dedication. Just remember to keep your missive short and to-the-point.

4. Consult an Expert and Ask for Assistance

Getting an expert’s opinion can also help improve your chances of getting into medical school. These people can assist you by identifying your previous application’s weaknesses and what you can do to address them.

Getting waitlisted can be frustrating, but keep in mind that it’s not the end. You can still get your acceptance letter if you work hard for it. This just means that it's time to take a step back and reevaluate your approach. If pursuing a career in medicine is what you really want, then don’t give up, get yourself back up, and do what you can to provide a stronger application.
