Not all clinical rotation programs are created equal. This portion of your medical education is a critical one. During your USCE you will take the knowledge learned in the classroom and apply it in real life. Now, you’ll find that varying clinical rotation programs won’t always have the same accreditations — an important quality to consider as you further your education. Joining the program with only the best accreditation is vital to your future career. Here’s what you need to know.
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, or ACGME, is a private non-profit organization that holds the standards for both residency and fellowship programs for United States graduate medical education. They make accreditation decisions based on these standards.
The American Osteopathic Association
The American Osteopathic Association, or AOA, is the accrediting agency for osteopathic medical schools in general as well as the main certifying body for doctors of osteopathic medicine. Similar to how the ACGME sets the standards for graduate medical education, the AOA does so for osteopathy.
Why Does It Matter?
When an institution or program has their ACGME accreditation, it guarantees they meet certain standards — both institution-wide as well as program-specific requirements — in terms of the training they’re providing to graduates. The accreditation means the institution and its residency and fellowship programs have been peer-evaluated to ensure quality. As a student, when you complete your clinical rotation at an ACGME-approved institution, you can rest assured you are preparing to become a proficient residency candidate.
The AOA is of value to graduates because it stands behind osteopathic physicians to both protect and promote their rights, constantly reaching for higher standards. It also serves to enhance the diversity of this profession, which includes so many unique approaches.
Essentially, it comes down to preparing yourself for a long-lasting and successful career. When you do it with a clinical rotation program with these accreditations, you are raising yourself to the standards they have set and preparing yourself for residency. Thus, finding these highly-accredited institutions is part of your mission as a student. But how?
